Conrad Oberg to Begin New York City Tour in Jacksonville!!
It was announced last week that Conrad Oberg, blind guitar, and piano phenom, has been chosen by the legendary Iridium Club in New York City to headline "Les Paul Night" on Monday, September 29th. Prior to making his Broadway/NYC debut, Conrad and his band will be scheduling a one-night-only performance at his "hometown" club, Mojo Kitchen, and Blues Bar in Jacksonville Beach!
In the Summer of 2009, a blind 15 yr. old rock/blues guitarist from Jacksonville, Florida named Conrad Oberg, was chosen to open the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock at the site of the original festival in Bethel Woods, NY. Conrad, who taught himself to play electric guitar by listening to Jimi Hendrix albums, was honored to say the least. Knowing that Les Paul performed every Monday at The Iridium Club in New York City, Conrad scheduled a stop at the club on Broadway in order to meet the legendary guitarist on the way back from Woodstock. At the age of 94, Les became ill and passed away four days before the meeting, while Conrad was traveling to the festival in upstate New York. Says Conrad, "As much as I loved playing at the Woodstock anniversary, it's always made me more than just a little sad that I didn't get to meet Les on that trip...I came so close."
Since, Mr. Paul's passing, The Iridium has established "Les Paul Night," a showcase for a variety the some of the worlds most well-known guitarists. Now a young man of 20 yrs., and almost five years to the day after Les' death, Conrad Oberg has been booked by The Iridium to headline "Les Paul Night" on Monday, September 29th. A short list of a few of the widely diverse guitarists that have accepted the "little Monday night gig" in the past includes Eric Johnson, Larry Carlton, Stephen Stills, Ted Nugent, Joe Walsh, Albert Lee, Jeff Beck, Zak Wylde, Todd Rundgren, Robbie Krieger, and Steve Miller, to name a few. When asked his feelings regarding the upcoming performance at The Iridium Conrad replied, "The Iridium is a legendary club, and Les Paul was one of my guitar playing heroes. The feeling of being asked to headline Les Paul Night at the Iridium just puts me beyond words. To say that I'm humbled is the understatement of the century."
Conrad taught himself to play piano at age two, and by the time he was four could play anything he heard, and was performing live. At 10, Conrad recorded his first album at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, backed by Jerry Lee Lewis' band, was given his first guitar, and began headlining rock & blues festivals and clubs throughout the South. Conrad was chosen as the most talented teen musician in the country in 2008 by 12 million Cartoon Network viewers, and was featured on their show "Props!" along with Robert Randolph.
In addition to his live performances, Conrad has been featured by CNN, USA Today, Rolling Stone, Premiere Guitar Magazine, and hundreds of other international media outlets. Conrad, who has nearly 4 million viewers on YouTube, has performed with acts as varied as: Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Dumpstaphunk, The Meters, Lettuce, Hubert Sumlin, Doc Watson, Buddy Guy, Levon Helm, Canned Heat, Jefferson Starship, Mountain, and many other legends of the rock, and blues music world. www.conradoberg.com
