Hike with a Naturalist: Protecting Park Trees
- Reserve
- Details
Pittsburgh's urban forest (trees that grow both in our parks and along our streets) provide countless benefits; they make our city beautiful while slowing stormwater, curbing erosion, and cooling our communities.
But these trees are vulnerable to disease and invasive insects (pests that are not native to our region). One such insect, the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB), has caused millions of dollars in damage and tree loss in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Ohio. There are no confirmed sightings of ALB in Pennsylvania, but we're on high alert as ALB frequently enters new areas through ports.
You can help protect our city's incredible urban forest. Join educators from the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and Tree Pittsburgh as we hike through Frick Park to learn about ALB and what we can all do to protect our trees.
Registration is required for this event.
This is an all-ages, rain-or-shine event. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Weather-appropriate clothes and footwear with good tread are encouraged.
Hike will meet at the Frick Environmental Center.
