Band Interests: Magic

Recalling the phased-out, distorted intensity of the early nineties, invoking the lush dreamworld of Twin Peaks - HELIOTROPES is the musical vehicle of four Brooklyn women that hail from West Virginia, New Jersey, and California.

Their 2011 release Ribbons 7" offered up heavy psych numbers steeped in dark magic and new-romantic leanings with a formidable lyrical presence. In 2012, Heliotropes signed to LA's Manimal Vinyl (Bat For Lashes, Warpaint, Sister Crayon), and have 2 singles slated for release alongside their first N. American tour this spring 2013.

"…shoegaze, goth, and classic psych metal - Heliotropes blend influences from Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Black Sabbath and My Blood Valentine. The guitar riffs are murky, the drums are bludgeoning, and the shrills of the violin are haunting. But it is California native Jessica Numsuwankijkul's detached, wistful vocals - which bring to mind Richard Ashcroft meets Mazzy Star - that turn spacey dissonance into beautiful hypnotic rock." - Soft Rock Renegade

"Yum, dissonant rock straight out of the early '90s. Where have these girls been all my life?" - Feeslist

------/ BELIEFS ------------------------------
http://beliefsmusic.com/music
Beamed up from the same Canadian hype scene that made good with Grimes and Doldrums, Toronto duo Beliefs are, in a musical sense, the blissed-out siblings of their freaky Montreal buddies. Clinging to the shaky shoegaze train, they manage to not be totally boring – unlike 99.9 per cent of their genre compatriots. Songs like ‘Catch My Breath’ give a serotonin injection to soaring dreampop that’s every bit as spiritual as their name suggests. Their self-titled debut LP – out March 4 on No Pain In Pop [March 5th on Hand Drawn Dracula & Manimal] – promises nifty cuts of the sonic variety. - NME's #1

"gazing fondly at ancient tape experiments and the abrasive circuit fuckery of early UK industrial acts...psychedelic collages that appear to be equally inspired by krautrockers like Amon Duul II and industrial pioneers like Throbbing Gristle" - weedtemple

-----------------/ ANNAPURNA KUMAR ------
animator, video artist, live visuals
https://vimeo.com/annapurna
http://cargocollective.com/annapurnakumar

Annapurna became interested in live visuals as a way to participate in music culture in a visual way. She views the methods of composition and looping used in animation to be analogous with those found in music. She creates all of her own material, drawing inspiration from objects with strong underlying geometry such as constellations, architecture, mosaics, mineral forms, video games, and graffiti.

She has toured with Brainfeeder artists Ryat, Samiyam, and Mono/poly and been commissioned for performance-specific projections by Bravo TV, the Annenberg Foundation, 1708 Gallery, Nacarubi Festival, Trashion, and Nexus Camp at Burning Man. Her work has been featured by prominent publications such as XLR8R, Create Digital Motion, and Modul8 software.
