A new play by Nick Dear, based on the novel by Mary Shelley, and directed by acclaimed film director Danny Boyle (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, 127 HOURS). Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, FRANKENSTEIN’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale. (15+).

Throughout the run of FRANKENSTEIN at the National Theatre, the two main actors -- Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller -- are alternating the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature on the NT stage. This duality and transformation is an integral part of the process and thinking behind the production. It has very much captured the imagination of the public and the press, making the performances a unique theatrical event. The versions are not exactly the same -- the script isn't changed but the staging and interpretation of the characters changes depending on who is playing the roles.
