TRUST

Self-Reliant Productions presents
TRUST

Playwright John Woehrle's new production, TRUST, invites audiences into the turmoil and devastation of clergy sexual abuse. Set in a fictional Minnesota Catholic university, the drama follows Michael, a senior, as the devastating effects of abuse by a trusted mentor and priest come crashing down on him and his prominent family.

TRUST evolved from the Self-Reliant Actor Workshop at MacPhail Center for Music, where writer John Woehrle was inspired by the true story of a close friend and member of the class who shared his haunting story of childhood sexual abuse by a trusted clergy member and its aftermath. In TRUST, Woehrle brings to life the ripple effects of trauma brought about by such a fundamental betrayal of trust – on the survivor, the family, and the broader community.

Michael has built an apparently “successful” life as an accomplished and talented young man, nearing graduation from college with the world at his feet. When an event triggers the secret trauma he has carried with him for years, the fragile nature of this façade is exposed, and his life unravels. The audience is drawn into Michael’s reality as his family and friends try desperately to figure out what has happened, and who is to blame. Can anyone be trusted? Can a family and community find it within themselves to come to terms with the betrayal and begin the long journey of healing?
