Event Description

This fall the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division will present an exhibit of pictorial maps of New York City, celebrating creativity in mapmaking and illustrating aspects of the city in intriguing and inventive ways. Guest curator Katharine Harmon, author of You Are Here NYC: Mapping the Soul of the City, will be joined in conversation by Rick Meyerowitz, illustrator, humorist, and author of Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead, a history of National Lampoon magazine. They’ll talk about the uses of imagery and humor in maps, and how the language of maps can enhance illustration.

To accompany the lecture, selections of maps that couldn’t make it into the final exhibit will be pulled from the Map Division's collections and will be out on display for a one-night-only experience. Spanning 180 years, they reflect the artistry and inventiveness of their creators.

This lecture is sponsored by the New York Map Society.
