Event Description
Defying Labels: New Roles, New Clothes

Lyndhurst’s summer 2016 exhibition Defying Labels: New Roles New Clothes tells the story of the revolutionary changes in women’s roles from 1880s to 1940 as reflected in their clothes. The exhibition utilizes the evolving wardrobes of three remarkable women, philanthropist Helen Gould, Anna Gould, Duchess of Talleyrand, and former actress Edith Kingdon Gould, the daughters and daughter-in-law of railroad baron Jay Gould.  With a focus on day wear, the exhibition highlights the development of the design attitudes and vocabulary that are direct precursors to modern dressing.

Included with tours of the mansion or purchase separately on this page.

Exhibition is general admission.  Exhibit entry hours are 10:45 am - 4:00 pm, Friday through Sunday and 12:45 pm - 4:00 pm Monday.  Last entry at 4:00 pm.

The exhibit is appropriate for children of all ages.  Due to the fragile nature of the exhibited clothing, we ask that parents carefully mind children under 12 and request that parents hold the hand of young children to prevent any touching of the clothing on view.

Online sales close at 8am each day. After 8am, please purchase your tickets at the Welcome Center.
