Event Description

In the Pulitzer Prize– and National Book Award–winning The Swerve, Stephen Greenblatt set out to discover the origin of our modern world. He now turns his eye to the origin of all origins in his latest book, The Rise and Fall of Adam and Eve. “At some moment in an immensely distant past it was a breath that brought Adam to life,” Greenblatt writes, “the breath of a storyteller.” Greenblatt, the 2016 Holberg Prize Laureate, will be joined by beloved playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner to discuss the tremendous theological, artistic, and cultural investment over centuries that made humanity’s fictional first parents so profoundly resonant in the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim worlds and, finally, so very “real” to millions of people even in the present.
