**This CD can be ordered anytime this semester for pickup at the VCU Music Box Office Tuesday or Thursday 1-3 p.m. or during any event for which the Box Office is open.** Titled "Front Burner" after an included composition by the legendary Basie arranger Sammy Nestico, this is the seventh album by the VCU Jazz Studies Program in the last 30 years, but only the second recorded entirely live before an audience--and without a single overdub or intercut. Our Jazz Studies Program is comprised entirely of undergraduate students; and our CD also features guest artists John Riley (drums), Taylor Barnett (trumpet), and Graham Breedlove (trumpet). Tracks include the music of Bob Mintzer, Thad Jones, Randy Brecker, Mike Crotty, Michael Philip Mossman, Billy Strayhorn, Sammy Nestico, Gordon Goodwin, Wayne Shorter, John D'earth, and VCU Jazz students Myrick Crampton and Allen Wittig. The selections come from five different concerts recorded at VCU's Sonia Vlahcevic Concert Hall, plus tracks representing our tour to the 2012 Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival. The album is humbly dedicated to Sammy Nestico: unparalleled composer and arranger, friend to jazz education, and friend to all he meets. Though this CD includes only one of his works, his music is present in any semester of VCU Jazz concerts.
