The City of Perth Amboy, Honorable Mayor Wilda Diaz Presents...

The Manhattan Camerata's FADO TANGO Project

The Fado Tango Project invites you to explore the connections between Argentinean Tango and Portuguese Fado with the unique sounds of bandoneon and Portuguese guitar, featuring four world-class musicians that specialize in the two genres: Nathalie Pires with Vocals, Daniel Binelli on bandoneon, Pedro da Silva on Portuguese guitar, Polly Ferman and Lucia Caruso on piano. Although Tango and Fado originate in two distant countries, they are closely related in harmony, melody and theme while differing in rhythm and language. The Fado Tango Project integrates both genres while going beyond them with exciting new compositions by Binelli, da Silva, and Caruso.

Featuring:

Perth Amboy's own, Nathalie Pires, proudly represents what is arguably the oldest urban folk music in the world; the soul of Portugal, Fado. Her intense voice and raw emotion has gained her overwhelming recognition by the media and her international audiences as one of today's leading “Fadistas” of her generation, a huge honor considering she was born and raised in the United States.

Daniel Binelli is widely acclaimed as the foremost exponent and torchbearer of the music of Astor Piazzolla, having been a member of Piazzolla's New Tango Sextet, and of Osvaldo Pugliese's Orchestra.

Lucia Caruso is the founder and artistic director of the Manhattan Camerata and a pianist and composer whose music has been featured in several films and been performed all over the world.

Pedro Da Silva is an eclectic composer who teaches courses at NYU and MoMA, and has performed in over a dozen countries on 18 different instruments such as sitar, mandolin, bouzouki and various types of guitar. He is the music director of the Manhattan Camerata.

Polly Ferman, one of the leading interpreters of the music of the Americas, New York-based pianist continues to captivate audiences with her outstanding performances of works by Gottschalk, Nazareth, Gershwin, Villa-Lobos, Ginastera, Piazzolla and many others.

The Manhattan Camerata is a unique chamber orchestra that seamlessly weaves together world and classical music elements spanning the globe and the ages. One of the goals of the Manhattan Camerata is to bridge several cultures and musical traditions showing their connections and similarities rather than their differences, making the listener travel to different musical worlds through carefully crafted programs that cohesively integrate either fado and tango, or Indian music and flamenco, medieval organum and the Beatles, and beyond. In their concerts they combine the western classical chamber orchestra with several world instruments (Portuguese guitar, bandoneón, sitar, darbuka, etc.) often in new compositions and arrangements by its founders Lucía Caruso and Pedro H. da Silva.
