Event Description
Women’s Jazz Festival: Sacred Songs

Celebrate Women's History Month at the Schomburg Center's annual Women's Jazz Festival. Join us for an exploration of sacred music from spirituals to gospel with mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran and vocalist Marcelle Davies Lashley.

ALICIA HALL MORAN, mezzo-soprano, brings diverse influences and passions together in a rich artistic brew. She was featured in the Ensemble of the 10-time Tony-nominated Gershwins' Porgy & Bess on Broadway as an Understudy to 5-time Tony winner Audra McDonald. She upholds the traditions of her great, great uncle Hall Johnson (legendary choral director, composer and preserver of the Negro Spiritual) and her greatest teachers (Shirley Verrett, Adele Addison, Hilda Harris, David Jones & Warren Wilson) without being tethered to the classical repertoire.

MARCELLE DAVIES-LASHLEY was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She is a classic hard working NY singer. One of those women that you have seen all over town making everyone else sound great, Marcelle has been seen with Carl Hancock Rux, Lizz Wright, and Toshi Reagon and BIGLovely among others. Drawing from her roots of Gospel, Jazz and R&B, Marcelle finally claims her place on center stage.

Curated by Toshi Reagon, Composer, Singer, Guitarist, and Producer (www.toshireagon.com)
