Event Description

Country: USA
Director: Michael Roemer
Presented in a restored 35mm print, this landmark independent film is set in the South during the turbulence of the civil rights era. It features a largely black cast – but was meant to be seen by integrated audiences. The story revolves around Duff, an itinerant black railroad laborer who romances and marries the preacher’s daughter, and insists on being treated with respect. Duff’s relationship with his own father, a broken-down drunk, teaches him valuable lessons about dignity and self-worth. In its day this classic was lauded at prestigious film festivals but received limited release. (1964; 92 min)
