West Side Story, Arthur Laurents’ tale of forbidden love is a classic Broadway musical made famous with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. This April, ten years after its first debut at Liberty High School, under the direction of Kathy Schnorr, the drama department brings it live to the stage again.
This spring, Liberty Drama is breaking away from children’s shows to give the audience a broader experience of theater. In the fall, Liberty performed Shrek the Musical. While that show was challenging to produce, it cannot compare to the physical and vocal magnitude of West Side Story. This will be the first classical Broadway show on the stage at Liberty High School in the five year tenure of director Tony Cimino.
West Side Story, is famous for its dancing and Mr. Cimino’s students are eagerly attacking the challenge of advanced choreography. Two choreographers, Tina Delcher, an English teacher at Liberty High School, and Jenny Delcher, a Baltimore area dance teacher, have been teaching the actors complicated moves to prepare for the upcoming event. Snow days have been abundant in Carroll County this year and students have taken the initiative to call “Jet-togethers” and “Shark Attacks” for impromptu dance rehearsals wherever they can find the space to gather their “gang”.
