In the Land of Rain and Salmon – Winner of the 2012 Governor’s Arts Award
Washington State Jewish Historical Society and Book-It Repertory Theatre have collaborated to create In the Land of Rain & Salmon, Jewish Voices of the Northwest: 1880-1920, a theatrical adaptation of “Family of Strangers, Building A Jewish Community In Washington State” and other stories.
The production brings to life some of the formative Washington state Jewish narratives in the book by Molly Cone, Howard Droker and Jacqueline Williams, as well as stories and oral histories preserved in the Washington State Jewish Archives, housed at the University of Washington Libraries Special Collections.
The script follows the challenges and triumphs of Jewish families that arrived in the Seattle area between 1880 and 1920 and who played a significant role in the cultural, civic and commercial development of Washington state.
