Choose Your Own Adventure: Three Inventors of the New American Lyric

LIVE brings together Bernadette Mayer, Matthea Harvey and Dorothea Lasky for an evening celebrating the experimental and adventurous in American poetry today. Together they represent the best of American lyricism, with voices as unique as they are elusive, uncensored and surprising. In a conversation moderated by Uzoamaka Maduka, these poets come together to rethink the question of what constitutes poetry.

MATTHEA HARVEY is the author of five books of poetry - If the Tabloids are True What Are You?Of Lamb, Modern Life (a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and a New York Times Notable Book), Sad Little Breathing Machine and Pity the Bathtub Its Forced Embrace of the Human Form. She has also published two children’s books, teaches poetry at Sarah Lawrence, and lives in Brooklyn.

DOROTHEA LASKY is the author of four books of poetry, most recently the forthcoming ROME, as well as ThunderbirdBlack Life, and AWE. She is the co-editor of Open the Door: How to Excite Young People About Poetry, and several chapbooks, including Poetry is Not a Project. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of Poetry at Columbia University’s School of the Arts and lives in New York City.

UZOAMAKA MADUKA is the Editor-in-Chief of The American Reader.

BERNADETTE MAYER is the recipient of the 2014 Poetry Society of America’s Shelley Memorial Award. Mayer is the author of more than two dozen volumes of poetry.
