How to Get Published . . . And Paid

Why do we take photographs? There is of course, the joy of creation and capturing a special moment. However, if we really are passionate about our craft we want to share our discoveries and our images with others. We want our work to be seen and appreciated. Better yet, we’d like to get paid for our images.

Photographer/writer Doug Keister has authored, co-authored, and photographed thirty-nine books, plus dozens of magazine articles, calendars, greeting cards and other printed material. Thousands of his images have been published worldwide, from the cover of Life magazine to the Tomb of the Month for American Cemetery magazine. Although he rarely does assignment photography, he is always finding clients who want his images AND are willing to pay for them.

During his two-hour informative and entertaining workshop Doug shows how he finds clients and how to apply his methods to get published and/or increase publishing opportunities. Thanks to digital technology and electronic communication it is much easier to show images without worrying about losing prints and slides. But how do you get the photo-buyer’s and editor’s attention?

Doug will show us how to use instant books, YouTube and other new technologies to your advantage. He’ll explain pricing, show us what sells, what doesn’t, and why. He’ll show us how to mine existing images and how to find a special niche.

Doug has spoken at dozens of venues across America including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D. C. and the Cooper-Union in New York City. In October 2010 he was featured on CBS SUNDAY MORNING. in a segment that included Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

During the first week of October Doug will be in the New York City area promoting his thirty-ninth book, Stories in Stone New York: A Field Guide to New York City Area Cemeteries and Their Residents.
