Paris Does Strange Things
1956. France. Directed by Jean Renoir. Screenplay by Renoir, Jean Serge. With Ingrid Bergman, Jean Marais, Mel Ferrer, Juliette Greco. Jean Renoir conceived this Belle Epoque romantic fantasy as a gift to the actress, whom he had long admired. Bergman rises to the occasion with a delightful performance as an impoverished Polish countess who brings good fortune to all the men she loves—inconveniently including both a politically ambitious French general (Jean Marais) and a carefree aristocrat (Mel Ferrer). Bergman performs in French, adding a fourth language to her repertoire. Digital restoration by Gaumont. Courtesy Janus Films. Digital projection. Selected by Isabella Rossellini. In French; English subtitles. 95 min.
