The Bells of St. Mary's
1945. USA. Directed by Leo McCarey. Screenplay by McCarey, Dudley Nichols. With Bing Crosby, Ingrid Bergman, Henry Travers, William Gargan. Leo McCarey’s sequel to his immensely successful Going My Way (1944) continues the adventures of folksy Father O’Malley (Bing Crosby), but finds a way to rekindle the warmth of McCarey’s romantic comedies by introducing a platonic relationship with Sister Mary Benedict (Bergman), the strict nun who supervises the parochial school at his dilapidated inner-city church. McCarey’s improvisational methods opened a new dimension for the serious, studious Bergman, who here gives one of her most joyous, spontaneous performances.
