Regeneration

1915. USA. Directed by Raoul Walsh. Screenplay by Walsh, Carl Harbaugh, from the memoir My Mamie Rose by Owen Frawley Kildare. With Rockcliffe Fellowes, Anna Q. Nilsson, William Sheer. Walsh’s first feature (and one of the first gangster films) was shot on the streets of New York City, the director’s hometown. Walsh would later romanticize the city in films like The Bowery and Strawberry Blonde, but Regeneration is notable for capturing authentic Lower East Side street scenes and residents. This candid adaptation of the autobiography of Owen Frawley Kildare—the so-called Kipling of the Bowery—follows an urchin-turned-gangster who tries to change his ways for love. Preserved by The Museum of Modern Art with support from the Celeste Bartos Fund for Film Preservation. Silent, with piano accompaniment by Donald Sosin. 60 min.
