Event Description

Includes the following films:

Will

1981. USA. Directed by Jessie Maple. A former athlete recovers from drug addition with the help of a homeless boy. Will depicts Harlem’s complex, lively early-1980s street life without the sensationalism of earlier Blaxploitation movies. Jessie Maple was the first African American woman member of the IATSE, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts, in New York. Print courtesy Black Film Center/Archive, Indiana University. Preserved with support from NYWIFT’s Women’s Film Preservation Fund. 70 min.

Bridges-Go-Round

1958. USA. Directed by Shirley Clarke. This film, crafted by Clarke from leftover project footage to elicit a sense of motion in inanimate objects that appear to be swaying with the music, incorporates both electronic and jazz scores. 8 min.

Windows in the Kitchen

1977. USA. Directed by Elaine Summers. Experimental filmmaker/choreographer Summers worked intensively with film and its inclusion in live performance. Shot by Paula Court at the Kitchen on Broome Street, dancer Matt Turney moves gracefully against the backdrop of large loft windows. Preserved with support from NYWIFT’s Women’s Film Preservation Fund. 12 min.
