Narrative
DC Premiere
Trapped in a loveless marriage, Viviane Amsalem (Ronit Elkabetz) has been applying to the rabbinical court for a divorce from her estranged husband for three years. Her husband continually refuses. In Israel, where neither civil marriage nor civil divorce exist, only an Orthodox rabbi can legalize a union or its dissolution with consent from the husband locking Viviane into a seemingly unending battle. This courtroom procedural is by turns an absurdist comedy and a heartrending personal drama. Israel’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, Gett is a moving portrait of a woman’s struggle to overcome an inert patriarchy and live a life of her own design.
Presented in conjunction with Reel Israel DC, a partnership with the Embassy of Israel and the Avalon Theatre.
