IN SILENCE

Dir. Zdeněk Jiráský  (84min, Slovak Republic/Czech Republic/Germany, 2014)
Czech and Slovak with English Subtitles
Narrative
East Coast Premiere

A vibrant, sound-rich and brilliantly inventive ode to the lives of Jewish musicians during the era of National Socialism in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany. Based on true stories of artists who achieved great musical success – ballet dancer Alice Flachová, pianist and conductor Karol Ebert, composer, pianist Edith Kraus, and conductor and director of the Dresden Theatre Arthur Chitz– In Silence which draws a sharp contrast between the protagonists’ carefree existence working and making music during the pre-war era and the subsequent severe upheaval in their lives brought on by the proliferation of Nazism. Instead of a planned documentary on these figures, director Zdeněk Jiráský ultimately turned out a feature film of exceptional visual and emotional impact, examining an ostensibly exhausted cinematic theme with extraordinary originality and intensity.
