I Am Suzanne!

1933. USA. Directed by Rowland V. Lee. Screenplay by Lee, Edwin Justus Mayer. With Lilian Harvey, Gene Raymond, Leslie Banks. One of the great pleasures of To Save and Project in recent years has been MoMA’s collaborations with Twentieth Century Fox on the preservations of pre–Production Code gems like Raoul Walsh’s Wild Girl and the Clara Bow talkies Hoop-la and Call Her Savage. This year is no exception, as we premiere the strange and delightful pre-Code rediscovery I Am Suzanne! Following on the success of their Depression-era fantasy Zoo in Budapest, director Lee, cameraman Lee Garmes, and matinee idol Raymond reunited for this sepia-tinted puppet romance musical, which stars the sensational Harvey as an ingénue dancer whose career is jeopardized by an injury and a domineering manager. When Harvey falls for Raymond, a puppeteer at Paris’s Théâtres des Marionnettes, she discovers that he has grown rather more infatuated with the puppet he has made in her image, leading to one of the oddest crimes of passion in movie history. Preserved by The Museum of Modern Art with support from the Celeste Bartos Fund for Film Preservation and Turner Classic Movies. 100 min.
