The Great Invisible

2014. USA. Directed by Margaret Brown. The Great Invisible is the first documentary feature to examine the infamous 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The disaster, which kept Americans glued to their televisions for months, was the largest offshore oil spill in American history; the blast killed 11 and injured many more among the 126 rig crewmembers, and millions of gallons of oil flowed unabated for over three months into the Gulf and the Atlantic Ocean, polluting the ecosystem, devastating local industries, and revealing the hazardous conditions of many offshore oil rigs in the Gulf and elsewhere. Director Brown, a native a Gulf-area native, brings a knowledgeable perspective as she travels to rural areas, towns, and cities in Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas to explore the personal and global implications of the disaster. Interviews with crewmembers, oil executives, residents, and fishermen offer a range of perspectives. Crewmembers tell of safety concerns that were communicated to the company before the disaster, and oil executives candidly discuss overall oil drilling in the area and the American lifestyle that demands oil. This is also an important update on where things are at today, just four-and-a-half years after the disaster. As oil rigs multiply in the Gulf, have the lessons been learned or forgotten?
