On the heels of the very solid "Voodoo Moon" album, Savoy Brown ups the ante with "Goin' To The Delta". This is one of those recordings that can make a man with the blues feel better. When he hears his own feelings accented by scorching, yet tasteful guitar work, it helps to melt away the pain. Opening with the hard charging "Laura Lee", followed by the steamy mid-tempo Blues of "Sad News", one can only hope that this is only the beginning of something really good. The rewards for listening come quickly. "Nothin' Like The Blues", "When You've Got A Good Thing" and "Goin' To The Delta" keep the hellbound train grinding down the track. I love these rockin' tunes, but my favorite is the slower, quieter "Just A Dream". Simmonds lays his sweet solos over a laid back Blues with some top-notch bass playing. The sound is so good, it sounds like you're right there in the studio. Traditionally, Savoy Brown includes a slide guitar number on every album, often an up-tempo workout. "I Miss Your Love" features that slide, albeit coupled with a slower grinding rhythm that allows the listener to savor the guitar playing. The rest of the album stays in the same bluesy vein and I can't call any of these songs bad. In fact, I feel that this is a new high point in the long and storied history of Savoy Brown.
