Kinky Friedman has always been an activist.  From his earliest days sitting around camp fires at his family’s Echo Hill Ranch and teaching children how to open their minds to the world, to actively participating in the civil rights movement with lunch counter sit-ins in Texas in the early sixties, Kinky has always sought positive change for his fellow Texans.

This year he toured Texas with another message of change, and it’s a big one.  Kinky Friedman wants Texas to end the prohibition on hemp and marijuana, and he just ran for Texas Agriculture Commissioner to try to get it done done.   No, Kinky is not a pot smoker.  He only smokes on Willie’s bus “as a matter of custom,” but he knows something good, when he sees it, and he’s quite sure it will be good for Texans.

Of course, on May 27th, Kinky was once again returned to the private sector.  Which tells us exactly how ready Texas is for change.  Worry not, though, followers - Kinky will continue to bring the message home.  The times, they are a’changing.

Like so many of the coolest people in the boom generation, Kinky Friedman first saw the world through the Peace Corps in the sixties.  Kinky did his PC time in Borneo as an agriculture extension worker, wherein he introduced the Frisbee to the natives and taught farming techniques to the indigenous people.

It was in Borneo that Kinky began to write the tunes that would stake his claim as a world class commentator on life.  In a time of great foment - the aforementioned sixties (and early seventies) - Kinky and a band of similarly irreverent souls formed Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys.  Through the biting satire of his songs and their raucous stage shows, the Jewboys offended all equally and with every opportunity.

Those tunes, which still inform and illuminate, continue to be played worldwide, where they may forever offend and inspire at the same time.  Regardless of the offense or inspiration, Kinky words have always spoken the truth, whether they are about discovering religion in a men’s room or railing against the social injustice of a redneck culture.

As musical satire became a less effective method of communicating, Kinky turned to prose.  Since that time he has written nearly thirty books, from detective novels to fond remembrances, all featuring his razor wit and incredible grasp of the human dialogue.  Kinky’s satirical look on life, these books, and his songs have been admired by millions, including such as President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush and even the late Nelson Mandela, who had three of Kinky’s albums smuggled onto Robben Island during his quarter century incarceration there.

Not content just to try to find ways to positively effect culture for his fellow man, Kinky co-founded the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch to help all his animal buddies.  Since its founding, Utopia has rescued and successfully placed thousands of dogs and other animals.  It now sits on Echo Hill ranch property, which recently converted from a cattle  raising operation (and summer camp) to a nature preserve.

Kinky became interested in politics, when he discovered it to be the only direct way to create change for Texas.  Though a life-long Democrat, Kinky was the first Independent gubernatorial candidate in the history of the state to make it onto the ballot (in 2006) through a petition requiring over one hundred thousand signatures.  He did it with an all-volunteer army.  And again he was ahead of the curve, as the first candidate anywhere in the country to openly advocate LGBT rights and issues as part of his platform.

Since that time and through another run at politics in 2010 - his first race for Texas Ag Commissioner - Kinky has traveled the world promoting Texas and American culture, performing and building an impressive network of movers and shakers, all of whom are willing and ready to pitch in for world change.

Yes, Kinky remains ahead of the curve.  As Kinky likes to quote Victor Hugo:  “No army on earth can defeat an idea whose time has come.”
