The Firemen’s Ball

1967. Czechoslovakia. Directed by Milos Forman. With Jan Vostrcil, Josef Sebanek, Josef Valnoha, Josef Kolb. This was the last of Forman’s five Czech films before he came to America. A riotously funny satire on small-town Czechoslovakia under Communism, featuring brilliant ensemble acting, the film provoked much controversy and legal action. The uproar brought Forman to Paris during the Soviet invasion of 1968, and he wisely decided to stay in the West. In Czech; English subtitles. 73 min.
