Rebecca
1940. USA. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Screenplay by Robert E. Sherwood, Joan Harrison, based on the novel by Daphne Du Maurier. Cinematography by George Barnes. With Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders, Judith Anderson, Nigel Bruce. Hitchcock, newly liberated from the limited production facilities in wartime London, had learned his trade in Germany, partly on the set of F. W. Murnau’s The Last Laugh. Despite the storied reluctance of producer David O. Selznick to spend money, Hitchcock turned in a film far more lavish and visually nuanced than anything he had done in England, and the film won Oscars for Best Picture and for George Barnes’s cinematography. 130 min.
