Event Description

High Sierra

1941. USA. Directed by Raoul Walsh. Screenplay by John Huston, W. R. Burnett, based on Burnett’s novel. Cinematography by Tony Gaudio. With Humphrey Bogart, Ida Lupino, Alan Curtis, Arthur Kennedy, Joan Leslie. Walsh had proven himself a master of location shooting in early talkies like In Old Arizona and The Big Trail. Here, through Tony Gaudio’s highly textured cinematography, Walsh helps usher in the film noir genre that would become so prominent in the ensuing decade. Italian-born Gaudio, an inventor of camera devices who made his first film as a teenager in 1903, wound up as president of the American Society of Cinematographers. He was a house director for many years at Warner Brothers, where he helped create a particular documentary-style “look” for their films, in keeping with the bleakness of the Depression era. 100 min.
