Raven’s End
1963. Sweden. Written and directed by Bo Widerberg. With Thommy Berggren, Keve Hjelm, Emy Storm. Widerberg, like the French New Wave directors, began as a critic, denouncing his country’s prevailing cinema and the idealization of Ingmar Bergman. Raven’s End was his second feature. Although the film is set before World War II, the working-class origins of the protagonist, an aspiring young writer, are somewhat autobiographical, and the milieu is similar to the British social realist school of the early 1960s, replete with anger and disappointment. Raven’s End was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. In Swedish; English subtitles. 101 min.
