The Servant

1963. Great Britain. Directed by Joseph Losey. Screenplay by Harold Pinter. With Dirk Bogarde, James Fox, Sarah Miles, Wendy Craig. Losey and Pinter brilliantly depict the degradation and downfall of the centuries-old class system. This was Losey’s tenth British film following his blacklisting in America, and it made him one of the world’s preeminent directors in the last two decades of his life. The Servant began Losey’s fruitful collaboration with Bogarde (who won the BAFTA Leading Actor award for this film), a partnership that also gave us King and Country and Accident—two more of the best films of the 1960s. 115 min.
