Event Description

Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area is operating guided tours of the Carrie Blast Furnaces. Constructed in 1906, the furnaces stood at the heart of U.S. Steel's Homestead Works until 1979. At one time, the furnaces and the steelworkers who labored in them produced more than 1,000 tons of iron a day. Now these 92-foot-tall structures stand as sentinels to Pittsburgh's steel heritage.

On this tour, a Rivers of Steel tour guide will lead visitors through the iron-making process, sharing the story of the site's technology, workers, and culture from it's heyday to the post-industrial present.

“In 1915, my grandfather began work on a helmet that could protect miners from falling objects. He based it on the doughboy, a helmet he’d worn as a soldier in World War I,” said Edward D. Bullard, CEO and president of the E. D. Bullard Company. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the hard hat, Rivers of Steel is offering a special general admission price of $19.15 on guided tours!

The Carrie Furnaces are part of a former industrial site. Heels and/or open-toed shoes are not permitted. Please dress appropriately for the weather as most of the tour takes place outdoors. At this time the site is not wheelchair accessible.
