Women’s Jazz Festival: Carolyn Malachi

Carolyn Malachi

Carolyn Malachi combines straight-ahead Jazz, Hip Hop, Spoken Word, and lots of imagination. The independent, Grammy nominated artist and great-granddaughter of Jazz pianist John Malachi counts Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def), Radiohead, and Sarah Vaughan among her greatest influences. Says the Huffington Post of Carolyn Malachi’s ‘Onward and Upward’ approach to music, “She’s not waiting for some moment in the future.” Malachi promotes education through partnerships with the School Fund, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, FIAT and the Recording Academy.  In 2013, Carolyn Malachi - the artist whom MTV calls “one of five R&B artists to obsess over” - released a full-length album, GOLD. The GOLDen tour begins Fall 2014.

THEESatisfaction

THEESatisfaction are Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White. Stas was born and raised in Tacoma, Cat in Seattle and Hawaii. The pair live/laugh/love/dance and create in Seattle, WA. They write, produce and perform their own material, funk-psychedelic feminista sci-fi epics with the warmth and depth of Black Jazz and Sunday morning soul, frosted with icy raps that evoke equal parts Elaine Brown, Ursula Rucker and Q-Tip. They met by what was clearly cosmic happenstance at the University of Washington and haven’t stopped the flow since.

Toshi Reagon, singer/composer/producer/activist returns for the third year as Curator of three concerts of the Schomburg Center's 21st Women's Jazz Festival.
