The Leopard

1963. Italy. Directed by Luchino Visconti. With Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon, Claudia Cardinale, Paolo Stoppa. Visconti, in many ways the “father” of Neorealism, had by this point morphed into the director of one of the most spectacularly lavish Technicolor films ever made, in startling contrast to his earlier work and that of such disciples as Francesco Rosi (Salvatore Giuliano) and Pietro Germi (Divorce, Italian Style), both of whom depict a vastly different portrait of Sicily. Visconti, in spite of his Marxist inclinations, was himself an aristocrat, making him doubtlessly comfortable with Lancaster’s Prince Fabrizio. Lancaster would have turned 100 this past week, and this is a modest tribute to one of cinema’s most versatile and underrated actors. In Italian; English subtitles. 184 min.
