The Job/The Sound of Trumpets

1961. Italy. Directed by Ermanno Olmi. With Loredana Detto, Sandro Panseri, Tullio Kezich. Olmi’s second feature helped continue the legacy of Neorealism, although the director argued that his reliance on nonprofessional actors distinguished him from that movement. In any event, his focus on the subdued lives of ordinary people (culminating in his 1978 epic The Tree of the Wooden Clogs), distinguished him from the grandeur, glamour, and angst that came to dominate most Italian cinema. In some ways, this paralleled the counter-currents in Britain between the realists and more flamboyant filmmakers (all transplanted Americans) like Joseph Losey, Stanley Kubrick, and Richard Lester. 93 min.
