Kundun
1997. USA. Directed by Martin Scorsese. With Tenzin Thuthob Tsarong, Gyurme Tethong Tulku, Jamyang Kunga Tenzin. This biography of Tibet’s 14th Dalai Lama is one of Scorsese’s most subtle and meditative offerings. Originally scheduled to shoot in India but denied government approval, Ferretti was ultimately forced to recreate Tibet in the Moroccan desert. Overseeing production design as well as costuming, Ferretti took much of his inspiration from conversations with the Dalai Lama himself. This collaboration with Scorsese is marked by the interplay between mental and physical space, a dynamic underscored by panoramic landscapes and intimate spirituality. Ferretti’s work resulted in Oscar nods for both Costume Design and Art Direction. 134 min.
