From Kristallnacht to Watergate: Memoirs of a Newspaperman
Harry Rosenfeld
In Conversation with Samuel Norich, Publisher, The Forward
In his evocative memoir From Kristallnacht to Watergate, Harry Rosenfeld tells of growing up in Hitler’s Berlin, where as a nine-year-old boy he saw his father taken away by the Gestapo in the middle of the night and witnessed the burning of his synagogue on Kristallnacht, the prelude to the Holocaust. His family found refuge in America and Rosenfeld, shaped by his childhood experiences, grew up to become a hard-driving editor at The New York Herald Tribune and The Washington Post. As The Post’s Metropolitan Editor, he was in charge of the paper’s Watergate expose and the boss of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Their iconic shoe-leather reporting laid bare one of the most consequential political scandals in U.S. history. This unsparing memoir offers an insider’s perspective on the unlikely Bernstein and Woodward partnership and depicts the tensions and pleasures of working for Ben Bradlee and Katharine Graham.
