DETAILS:

Under the direction of Andrés Cárdenes, the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic will perform Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmila Overture, Szymanowski's Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring violin soloist Kryzsztof Rucinski, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 in D Minor.

PREVIEW PARTY:

The School of Music’s Art of Audience Engagement class invites you to a “Preview Party” beginning at 7:30 pm prior to the start of the concert. Balloon trails of different colors will guide patrons to interactive events featuring musicians, instruments, and technology. 

Pre-Concert
The “technology trail” will present a new iPad app created in collaboration with the School of Computer Science to enhance the live concert experience along with incorporating Tweet Seats and program notes.

The “musician’s trail” offers the opportunity to chat with musicians, who will present their instruments, play excerpts of the pieces being performed, and answer questions.

Intermission
At intermission, a backdrop of red balloons in the lobby will create a stage for a compelling presentation by Master of Music student, Evan Vockley on the controversial historical context surrounding Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony.  This will be followed by a real-time listening guide during the concert via Tweet Seats. 

Post Concert
Upon leaving the concert, balloon clusters in the lobby will serve as meeting points for patrons to meet the conductor Andrés Cárdenes and soloist Krzyzstof Rucinski along with a number of other orchestra musicians.

TWEET SEATS:

Tweet Seats refer to seats in which tweeting is permitted during a performance by audience members. Carnegie Mellon School of Music is launching this new pilot project to encourage a subsection of our audience to engage in an online discussion about the performance they are experiencing. We ask that Tweet Seat participants sit in the second balcony of Carnegie Music Hall with their phones silenced and dim back-light to lowest setting. Additionally, participants who are not able to join us at the hall can watch the webcast of the performance.

Utilizing the hashtag #CMUCardenes, participants will engage in an online conversation with School of Music faculty members Lance LaDuke and Daniel Nesta Curtis who will be leading the discussion from @CMUMusic. Feel free to tweet reactions to the performance or ask questions.
