The Lodger
1944. USA. Directed by John (Hans) Brahm. With Merle Oberon, George Sanders, Laird Cregar, Sara Allgood. This remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Jack the Ripper film (made shortly after young Hitchcock’s return to London following an extended scholarly stint in the Berlin film studios) shows the enduring influence of Weimar Expressionism on the Hollywood horror film. Brahm had a subordinate role in the German industry, but he married one of late-Weimar’s great young stars, Dolly Haas, who wound up working for Hitchcock on I Confess, which will be shown later in this series. Brahm ultimately became a television director, including making several films for Hitchcock’s TV series. 84 min.
