Confessions of a Nazi Spy

1939. USA. Directed by Anatole Litvak. With Edward G. Robinson, Francis Lederer, George Sanders, Paul Lukas. In this first truly anti-Nazi Hollywood film, Robinson plays an FBI agent investigating the German-American Bund. Litvak, a native of Kiev, had worked briefly in Germany during Weimar, including a stint assisting G. W. Pabst. Lederer had also worked for Pabst, appearing in his masterpiece, Pandora’s Box. After working with Frank Capra on the Why We Fight series of wartime documentaries, Litvak became a truly international director, although he never made another film in Germany. 104 min.
