The Stranger

1946. USA. Directed by Orson Welles. With Welles, Edward G. Robinson, Loretta Young. Welles imbibed much of F. W. Murnau’s technique through his study of John Ford, and he owed an enormous debt to both of them. The Stranger tells the story of a Nazi who escapes to America. The film is minor and restrained by Welles’s standards, but its Weimar-inspired visuals are obvious. Victor Trivas, who adapted the Oscar-nominated script, had directed several films under Weimar, including the powerful Hell on Earth (1931). 95 min.
