Hatred

1938. France. Directed by Robert Siodmak. Cinematography by Eugene Schuftan (Eugen Schufftan). With Harry Baur, Albert Prejean, Pierre Renoir, Marcel Dalio. Schuftan had worked with Robert Siodmak on People on Sunday and other Weimar films, and he worked with him again in Hollywood, after a stint with Marcel Carné. He was responsible for the superb visual quality of Hatred, an atmospheric melodrama set mostly in Shanghai. He also developed the legendary Schuftan Process for combining live action with miniatures, which was used with great success as early as Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927). Print courtesy of Gaumont. In French; English subtitles. 106 min.
