The Cry
1957. Italy. Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. With Steve Cochran, Alida Valli, Betsy Blair, Dorian Gray. Although he had already made several features and shorts, Il Grido, which focuses on the alienation and despair of a desolate and unforgiving modernity, defined Antonioni’s future career. Using mostly non-Italian actors in key roles, he staked his claim to a univeralism that eluded Fellini and De Sica, and his austere style essentially rejected the classicism to which Rossellini and Visconti aspired. In effect, Antonioni moved the cinema in a new direction. In Italian; English subtitles. 116 min.
