The Black Cat
1934. USA. Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. With Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, David Manners, Jacqueline Wells (Julie Bishop). Ostensibly based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe, this Expressionistic horror film was the first pairing of Karloff (Frankenstein) and Lugosi (Dracula), the two giants of the Universal Pictures horror cycle. In his youth, Ulmer had assisted two other greats, Max Reinhardt (in the theater) and F. W. Murnau, and under Weimar he collaborated with Robert Siodmak on People on Sunday. 65 min.

1935. Mexico. Directed by Fred Zinnemann. Cinematography by Paul Strand. With Emilio Gomez Muriel. This visually stunning documentary, about a strike by Mexican fishermen, probably influenced Pare Lorentz (The Plow that Broke the Plains) and Orson Welles (It’s All True). Zinnemann’s youthful Weimar credentials also included work on People on Sunday. He eventually became an Oscar-winning Hollywood director. In Spanish; English subtitles. 60 min.
