Einmal eine grosse Dame sein
1934. Germany. Directed by Gerhardt Lamprecht. With Käthe von Nagy, Wolf Albach-Retty, Gretl Theimer. This is a satirical look at German class-consciousness and status seeking. Lamprecht’s directorial career spanned from 1921 to 1958, and his most well-known films were Emil and the Detectives (from an early Billy Wilder script) and Madame Bovary, starring Pola Negri. Perhaps even more memorable was his role as a film historian; he produced the definitive catalogue of German silent films, published by the Deutsche Kinemathek, and his collection of documents formed the basis of the Kinemathek’s research material. Print courtesy of the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation. In German; English subtitles. 87 min.
