2103 Reading Series 6-Play Package

Intrepid presents staged readings monthly at the Encinitas Library. Each reading begins with a complementary wine and appetizer reception and is followed by an opportunity to talk with the director and actors. The doors open at 6:30pm and the evenings typically end between 9 and 10pm.

I HATE HAMLET by Paul Rudnick
Paul Rudnick’s comedy revolves around a discontented TV actor who is visited by the ghost of John Barrymore as he prepares to play Hamlet in Central Park. The New York Times called it “unapologetically silly and hilarious.”

DOUBT by John Patrick Shanley
Sister Aloysius believes in restraint, self-control and a rigid dedication to discipline. When she learns Father Flynn has taken a special interest in one of her students, she becomes suspicious of his progressive, engaging attitudes and considers charging the priest with her unproven allegations. ALL MY SONS by Arthur Miller
Arthur Miller’s 20th century classic play tells the story of Joe Keller, a captain of industry during World War II, who was imprisoned some years before the play starts for selling faulty parts to an airplane manufacturer, which led to the death of American soldiers. He is later cleared of all charges, though suspicions about his character never leave, and as the play progresses the questions start to plague him. This questioning of the moral fiber of a successful American tycoon helped to land Miller in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee in the 50s. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play.

JULIUS CAESAR by William Shakespeare
This tense and tightly plotted political thriller portrays the life-and-death struggle for power in Rome. Even as the people of Rome celebrate Caesar’s victory over Pompey, he is suspected of becoming too powerful for his own good and friends and enemies conspire to assassinate him. Despite warnings to beware the Ides of March, Caesar goes to the senate and is killed, leaving the future of Rome in question. An action-packed drama that raises a timeless question: is the killing of an aspiring tyrant justifiable in order to avert dictatorship?
