Event Description
NO LATE SEATING.

Flamenco-inspired chamber opera by Osvaldo Golijov;
Libretto by David Henry Hwang
Music Director: Andres Cladera; Stage Director: Karla Boos
October 19-November 2, 2012
East Liberty Presbyterian Church

Argentine composer Golijov's powerful 90-minute chamber opera mixes flamenco with other age-old traditions, reviving music's elemental powers. The story centers on the passionate relationship of playwright Federico Garcia Lorca and the great Catalan tragedian Margarita Xirgu, who portrayed his famous women. Politics at the dawn of Spain's Civil War are its backdrop; the never-resolved circumstances of Lorca's assassination at the hands of Franco's henchmen are its climax. The project will unite many of the artists of Quantum's Maria de Buenos Aires, including mezzo-soprano Raquel Winnica-Young and flamenco dancer Carolina Loyola-Garcia.
