More about Grand Guignol
Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol ("The Theater of the Big Puppet") was in the Pigalle area of Paris. From its opening in 1897 until its closing in 1962 it specialized in naturalistic horror shows. Its name is often used as a general term for graphic, amoral horror entertainment. One of the leading tourist attractions of the French capital for many years, it was the classic shock theatre specializing in productions designed to horrify and sicken. No show was considered a success unless at least a couple audience members fainted! In its day it produced some truly terrifying theatre that explored the dark limits of what could be accomplished on the stage.
