Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard; local author of the delightful children’s books Aunt Flossie's Hats ( and Crabcakes Later)and What's In Aunt Mary's Room invites you to join her for tea during the Nia “Open a Child’s Eyes to Art” exhibit. An accomplished teacher and writer, Ms. Howard draws on her rich family history for her stories. She loves to describe ordinary and extraordinary African Americans while showing that her books are truly American stories that everyone can enjoy. This activity is a family affair held in the back drop of the final day of the Gee’s Bend quilt exhibit. Parents, Grand Parents, and all extended family members are encouraged to bring your school aged child to meet this phenomenal author, participate in a book inspired craft project and an “afternoon tea party.” There will be a prize awarded to the adult voted “Best Hat” in honor of the book Aunt Flossie's Hats (and Crabcakes Later).

Cost of an adult & child admission is $25.00 which includes the Gee’s Bend exhibit and tea party. Multi children admissions at a reduced family rate can be purchased by contacting niaquiltguild@ymwaha.org

The nationally acclaimed Gee's Bend Quilt Collective will be in Pittsburgh to demonstrate their unique heritage quilt-making skills. The women of the collective, who are virtually self-taught, are carrying on a traditional cultural art form passed down generationally since the 19th century.

Gee's Bend Quilts have toured some of the most prestigious Museums in the United States including the Denver Art Museum, Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, Museum of Art in Knoxville, Tennessee and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, to name a few.

This is a rare opportunity to view these spectacular quilts, participate in community workshops scheduled throughout the city and meet several legendary women who sustain themselves practicing traditional quilt-making.
