Gee's Bend Quilt Collective Exhibit
Thu. Oct 14, 2010 at 12:00pm EDT (-04:00)
***Special Event***
Join us today for a Town Hall Meeting hosted by Chris Moore. Moore is probably best known for his work on Black Horizons. The Emmy-winning series, which he co-produces and hosts, is the longest running minority affairs show on public television. Chris will lead a community discussion between audience members and the Women of Gee’s Bend, Nia Quilt Guild and YMWAHA; the organization responsible for bringing Gee’s Bend to Pittsburgh.
Time: 2p-4p
Cost: $8
The nationally acclaimed Gee's Bend Quilt Collective will be in Pittsburgh to demonstrate their unique heritage quilt-making skills. The women of the collective, who are virtually self-taught, are carrying on a traditional cultural art form passed down generationally since the 19th century.
Gee's Bend Quilts have toured some of the most prestigious Museums in the United States including the Denver Art Museum, Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, Museum of Art in Knoxville, Tennessee and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, to name a few.
This is a rare opportunity to view these spectacular quilts, participate in community workshops scheduled throughout the city and meet several legendary women who sustain themselves practicing traditional quilt-making.
